Models We offer the following models to show you a) the kind of "scoping" models created by the facilitated modeling process; and b) what a model looks like in "Stella", the modeling language we use. Stella and Sample Stella Models The demo models from ISEE Systems (formally High Performance Systems) web site and any of our models listed below will require either a full research version of Stella or the Demo version from ISEE in order to run. To use the demos, download the model by choosing the HTTP to the right of the model name. Save the file in a place on your harddisk where you can find it. After the download has completed, run Stella and then, from within Stella, open the model you saved. (You may need to do File > Close Model first, and then File > Open.) Upper Fox River Basin Model (Wisconsin, USA, 1998) The Upper Fox River Basin model is concerned with the linkages between ecology and economics in the Upper Fox Geographic Management Unit (GMU) in the state of Wisconsin, USA. It looks at the impact of population growth and land use issues, especially the increasing demand for residential land, habitat fragmentation, and the biotic integrity of water. This model and the process that was used to develop it, is described in Mediated Modeling, chapter 5. [download UFfinal.stm; 201 KB] HTTP Ria Formosa Coastal Wetland Model (Ria Formosa, Portugal, 1998) The Ria Formosa model is also concerned with the linkages between ecology and economics in the management of the Ria Formosa Coastal Wetland. The model helped the stakeholders examine the role of dredging in the Ria Formosa, the cultivation of bivalves and fish as commercial activities, and the value of ecosystem services provided by the salt marsh. This model and the process that was used to develop it, is described in Mediated Modeling, chapter 9. [download RFfinal.stm; 245 KB] HTTP Sage Grouse model (Idaho, USA, 2000) This model was developed by Ellen Pedersen and Bill Grant to examine Sage Grouse populations in Southeastern Idaho, U.S.A.. Specifically, the effect of sheep grazing and fire on the populations were explored with the involvement of a variety of stakeholders. This model and the process that was used to develop it, is described in Mediated Modeling, chapter 8. [download SageGrouse8.stm; 1.47 MB] HTTP Patagonia Coastal Zone Model (Patagonia, Argentina, 1996) This model was constructed as part of the development of the Patagonia Coastal Zone Management Plan (PCZMP). It examines the economic value of the fisheries sector and its sustainable management, both ecological and economic. The model also simulates possible impacts of oil spills and dumping of tanker ballast water on the penguin population, which can have a significant negative impact on tourist industry incomes. [download PCZM.stm; 313 KB] HTTP Future Outlook Model for Banff-Bow Valley Study (Banff, Canada, 1995) This model helped integrate information on ecological indicators, economics and public values into the environmental policy process for the Banff-Bow Valley study. The study was initiated by the Minister of Canadian Heritage to provide recommendations on future policy and management of human use and development in Banff National Park. [model not available due to privacy agreements] Impacts of Ultra-Violet radiation on socio-economic and ecosystem service values (Ushuaia, Argentina, 2004) This is a 5-year program 2000 - 2004 under sub-contract with the University of California in San Diego as part of a large research consortium with researchers from Canada, USA, Argentina, Chile and Brazil. The contract is funded by the Inter-American Agency for Global Climate Change. A multi-disciplinary group of researchers with backgrounds in UV radiation, ecological modeling, marine-, fresh water-, and marsh systems studied the impacts of UV radiation on aquatic systems and, through the modeling process apply those results to possible consequences for socio-economics and ecosystem values on a global scale. Local stakeholders will gather with the principle investigators from the five research areas of the IAI program for a mediated modeling process. Together they examined the most important ecological and economics aspects within the defined problem area. [download UVmodel8-17.stm; 1.96 MB] HTTP Impacts of enhanced UV-b on socio-economic and eco-system service values The UV-b model is developed through a process of bringing local stakeholders in Ushuaia together with the Principle Investigators of a project funded by the Inter-American Agency for Global Change (IAI). Besides some direct local socio-economic impacts of enhanced UV-b radiation in Ushuaia, the concept of economic impacts percolating through aquatic and marsh systems is represented by values for eco-system services. Based on a synthesis model, the conclusion for the marshes is that UV-b does not add a significant stress relative to potential impacts of sea level rise. Mainly Salicornia is susceptible to UV damage and there is relatively little Salicornia in the high latitudes where the strongest UV fluctuations occur. The conclusion hints to a potential impact of a systemic order at a global level, based on the research at microcosm level and synthesized in the model for the marine system. Enhanced UV-b in the presence of certain pollutants could cause a shift at a community level from primary producers to bacteria. This may impact the carbon cycle. A paper is in preparation and emphasizes the process of group model building to engage stakeholders, synthesize research results and assist in the development of hypothesis for global scale.
